The skins come from wild goats, which have been culled to protect New Zealand’s native forests. They respond well to being played with wild and passionate energy. Yet, they are also sensitive instruments, so care should be taken at all times to protect the skin from damage.

Mamaki is just Northeast of Whangarei, about 4kms from the coast. Backpacker guests have the use of Mountain Bikes, Snorkeling gear, Body boards and Fishing tackle. Guests also get a discount on Kayak hire, Horse treks and boat trips to the Poor Knights Islands.
This area is still unspoilt (none of the bus trips come here) and really worth a visit with great beaches, diving, fishing, surfing, horse riding and bush walks.
